Introduction

On February 26, 1936, an unprecedented coup attempt called the “February 26 Incident” occurred in Japan. The only part of the attempted coup that took place outside of Tokyo happened at Kofuso, the former annex to the long-established inn Ito-ya in Yugawara. Currently at Kofuso, materials related to the incident, such as articles left by those who were involved, photos, newspapers, and more are on display, and volunteer guides are available to provide guidance and information to facility visitors.
