Introduction
Yugawara Onsen is closely intertwined with the Manyoshu, a collection of waka poems from about 1,300 years ago. Many poems with the themes of “hot springs” and “bamboo” can be found within it.
After visiting Yugawara, many waka and haiku poets fell in love with the area, and composed poems about its flourishing natural features. That sentimental atmosphere of ages past is still alive today.
The Light Festival is a highly romantic event, with images of murmuring streams surrounded by greenery and bathed in moonlight, just as the poets must have beheld in their day. Bamboo lanterns and fireworks accentuate the evening calm with an air of autumn celebration. Gazing at their captivating glow, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you may find yourself, if momentarily, at peace… as if the poets of old, rich in sensitivity, have inspired you.
